Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Road transport unions play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of road users in many parts of Nigeria. In Bida LGA, Niger State, road transport unions are not only involved in facilitating transportation but also contribute to maintaining public safety and security. According to Emeka and Adamu (2024), these unions help in the monitoring of activities along major roads, reporting criminal activities, and ensuring that drivers comply with security regulations. However, the role of these unions in security surveillance has not been extensively studied. This research seeks to evaluate how road transport unions in Bida LGA contribute to improving security along major transportation routes, particularly in combating crimes such as theft, kidnapping, and other forms of road-related violence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Bida LGA, road transport unions play a key role in maintaining safety on major roads, yet their contribution to security surveillance remains underexplored. Road-related crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping have been reported along major transport routes in the area, but there is limited understanding of how road transport unions can help mitigate these security challenges. This study aims to appraise the role of these unions in enhancing security surveillance in Bida LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the role of road transport unions in ensuring security along roads in Bida LGA.

  • To identify the challenges faced by road transport unions in performing security surveillance.

  • To recommend strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of road transport unions in improving security.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do road transport unions contribute to security surveillance in Bida LGA?

  • What challenges do road transport unions face in ensuring safety along transport routes in Bida?

  • What measures can be adopted to improve the security functions of road transport unions in Bida?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Road transport unions do not significantly contribute to security surveillance in Bida LGA.

  • H₁: Road transport unions significantly contribute to security surveillance in Bida LGA.

  • H₂: Strengthening the role of road transport unions will lead to enhanced security on transport routes in Bida LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of road transport unions in security surveillance and their potential to contribute to reducing road-related crimes in Bida LGA. The findings will help improve collaboration between transport unions, law enforcement agencies, and local government authorities to enhance public safety.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on road transport unions in Bida LGA, Niger State, assessing their involvement in security surveillance. Limitations include the difficulty in accessing detailed records from transport unions and potential resistance from some unions due to concerns over security and confidentiality.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Road Transport Unions: Organized groups representing road transport workers, including drivers and conductors, that advocate for their welfare and ensure safe operations.

  • Security Surveillance: The monitoring and reporting of suspicious or criminal activities, aimed at maintaining public safety and order.

  • Road-related Crimes: Criminal activities such as robbery, kidnapping, and assault that occur along transportation routes.
